The misunderstanding of lead glass-filled Ruby

by Touchstone Gems 7. August 2014 20:21

In the wake of the July 28 Today show segment on lead glass–filled rubies, the New York Gemstone Association says the industry needs to develop a plan to deal with misunderstanding of the product.

The GIA and AGL now refer to these gemstones as 'composite'. Lead glass–filled ruby is unstable and if subjected to ultrasonic cleaning either at home or unwittingly by a jewellery store it may badly discolour or even fall apart.  It is also advisable to keep them away from strong acids.

At Touchstone Gems, we would expect that all retailers, wholesalers, and other gemstone dealers in South Africa clearly disclose at every level leading to the consumer, all treatments and enhancements of their products.

Consumer confidence is a foundation of our economic health, and if that is shaken by possible misrepresentation from misunderstanding it may affect the entire jewellery industry in South Africa.

Did you know that De Beers to this day control worldwide diamond production and supply. Quality diamonds are not scarce, but De Beers control how much supply comes on the market and that keeps prices high.
